Nadun Bandara, from the Royal College of Colombo, was able to win the award for the best male athlete while Tharushi Karunarathne from Walala A. Ratnayake Central College was awarded the best female athlete in the All-Island Schools’ Championship, which was held at Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Nadun Bandara won the award based on his performance of 13.64 seconds in the boys’ 110 m hurdles event, while a timing of 54.22 seconds in the girls’ 400 m event secured the award for Tharushi Karunaratne.
Jayavi Rathida, representing Royal College, Panadura, won the best thrower of the tournament (shot put – 16.94 m) award, while the best jumper of the tournament award was granted to A.K. Korala (triple jump – 15.57m) from the Yoshida International School, Sapugaskanda.
The athletes from the Western Province won the overall championship this year, recording a total of 1096.5 points. The runners-up were from the Central Province, who scored 464.5 points.
