ECONOMYNEXT – One person died and two injured due to inclement weather in Sri Lanka while more than 200 people have been evacuated to relief camps, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said on Wednesday.

The death was recorded from Sri Lanka’s central district of Kandy, while the two injured people have been recorded from the adjoining Kegalle district, the DMC said.

DMC data showed around 237 people of 69 families are in relief camps as at 6.00 pm on Wednesday (07), while 10,885 people from 2729 families have been affected by the heavy rains in the country.

Irrigation Department said water levels of Kalu river from Kalawellawa and Putupaula areas are still on the rise and asked people in low lying areas to be vigilant regarding possible minor floods.

Officials said several spells of showers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western
provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Strong winds about 50 km per hour can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central hills.

In the sea areas, officials asked naval and fishing communities to be vigilant, due to possible increase in swell waves (about 2.0 – 2.5 m) in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. (Colombo/Sept07/2022)
