Sri Lanka to lease railway reservation land for emergency farming

Must read

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers had cleared a proposal to lease a part of 14,000 acres railway reservation lands to low income persons and resident living nearby to grow short term crops, Agriculture Minister Bandula Gunewardene said.

“About 10 percent of the 14,000 acre reservations had already been leased to various parties,” Transport Minister Bandula Gunewardene said.

“Some of the land is forcibly occupied and the rest is unused.”

Agriculture Minister Amaraweera said crops like cow pea, greengram and vegetables could be grown in the land.

The railway reservations were made designated during British colonial times, he said. (Colombo/June21/2022)
