ECONONMYNEXT – A Sri Lankan woman threw her five-year-old son into the Kelani River over a bridge in Wattala, Colombo, after which she attempted to jump off the bridge herself but was prevented by passersby, police said.
The incident had occurred Wednesday (15) evening.
The police media division said the woman, a resident of Hendala, Wattala, had been on crutches.
She has been taken into police custody and is expected to be produced in court on Thursday (16).
Wattala Police is investigating the incident and a search operation is under way to find the missing five-year-old, police said.
Police was unable to confirm if the incident was motivated by economic woes.
Sri Lanka is currently in the throes of its worst economic crisis since Independence, and skyrocketing living costs have hit the public hard. (Colombo/Jun16/2022)
