Sri Lanka’s outgoing army commander Shavendra Silva to be Chief of Defence Staff


ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s outgoing Army Commander General Shavendra Silva will serve as Chief of Defence Staff starting Wednesday (01), an official said.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s media spokesman Kingsly Rathnayaka tweeted that Rajapaksa handed over the letter of appointment to Silva Tuesday (31) morning at the President’s House in Colombo.

Prior to the appointment, Silva served as acting Chief of Defense Staff during the COVID-19 pandemic following his appointment as Commander of Army in 2019.

Meanwhile, Major General Vikum Liyanage was appointed the 24th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, by President Rajapaksa on Tuesday, replacing Silva.

The president’s media division said Liyanage will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General from Wednesday with the assumption of duties as the new army chief.

Liyanage joined the army as an officer cadet in 1986, and after basic training, was posted to the Gajaba Regiment, the statement said.

During his 35-years military career, he held the positions of Platoon Commander, Company Commander and Adjutant of 4th Gajaba Regiment.

In the last phase of Sri Lanka’s war against the separatist Tamil Tigers, Liyanage commanded the 8th Gajaba Regiment of 57 and 56 Divisions which were actively conducting operations, the statement said. (Colombo/May31/2022)
