ECONOMYNEXT – A school exam invigilator in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, was arrested on Tuesday (31) for allegedly molesting a female student while on duty at a GCE Ordinary Level examination.
The Ministry of Education said the incident had taken place last Wednesday (25) at a remote school Hindogama, Anuradhapura, in north-central Sri Lanka.
The invigilator had allegedly molested the girl under the guise of helping her with a question. According to the ministry statement, the Director of Education of the North Central Province had requested the Minister of Education to commence an investigation after several media organisations reported on the matter.
After obtaining statements from the victim, the persons in charge of the exam hall in question, the accused and fellow students who were present at the time, and the accused was made to appear in court before being taken into custody, the statement said.
Further investigations are being conducted on a departmental basis, and disciplinary action will be taken against the invigilator if proven guilty, it added. (Colombo/May31/2022)
