Kylian Mbappé has committed his future to the Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain Football Club (PSG), turning down a move to the Spanish giants, it was reported on Sunday (22).

The French champions were in danger of losing the 23-year-old for free this summer with his previous deal set to expire.

What is PSG?

Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, commonly referred to as Paris Saint-Germain, Paris, Paris SG, or simply PSG, is a professional football club based in Paris, France.

They compete in Ligue 1, the top division of French football. As France’s most successful club, they have won over 40 official honours, including ten league titles and one major European trophy. Their home ground is the Parc des Princes.

Saturday’s announcement

Real Madrid had been tipped to sign Mbappé, but an improved contract offer from PSG revived hopes of the club holding on to him over the last weekend.

It turns out that PSG did manage to convince the striker to commit to his future, with a new deal announced last Saturday (21) night ahead of their match against Metz.

“I wanted to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at PSG, and of course, I am very happy about it,” Mbappé had said upon announcing the deal.

Thanking PSG Head

“I am convinced that here I can continue to grow within a club which gives itself all the means to perform at the highest level. I am also very happy to be able to continue to evolve in France, the country where I was born, grew up, and flourished.

“I would like to thank the (PSG) President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, for his confidence, his understanding, and his patience,” Mbappé has added.

‘Together taking up magical bets’

Nasser bin Ghanim Al-Khelaifi, 48, is a Qatari businessman and the Chairman of beIN Media Group, Chairman of Qatar Sports Investments, and the Qatar Tennis Federation, and also the Vice President of the Asian Tennis Federation for West Asia.

“I also have a thought for all the supporters of PSG, in France, and around the world, for their countless expressions of affection, especially in recent months. It is together, united, and ambitious, that we will take up the most magical bets,” Mbappé had stressed.

The highest-paid player

PSG have made Mbappé their highest-paid player after tying him to a new deal, with the 23-year-old now on a more lucrative salary than the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, other global icons in contemporary football.

Mbappé is also set to receive a signing bonus of over € 100 million (Rs. 37.6 billion) and PSG President Al-Khelaifi has promised him there will be wholesale changes at both boardroom and squad level.
