Two airport hotels at MRIA – The Morning

Must read

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution furnished by the Minister of Tourism Prasanna Rantunga on Monday (14), calling proposals from investors to establish two airport hotels in two land spots adjoining the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA).

The two hotels are expected to be four-star hotels and it has been noted that such infrastructure would attract tourists, and the two land plots are situated at the right side of the terminal building at the MRIA.

Since there are limited hotels in operation in the MRIA at Hambantota, the Minister pointed out that it would be a good opportunity to make it a major tourist destination.

Recently, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the ultra-low-cost national airline of the UAE launched a route from Abu Dhabi to Mattala as its first South Asian destination.

Meanwhile, Kuwait-based carrier Jazeera Airways has been suggested to commence flights to the MRIA, commencing hub operations from the MRIA to regional destinations, as the aforesaid airport is capable of servicing larger aircrafts.

On 14 February, speaking to The Morning Business, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. (AASL) Chairman Maj. Gen. (Retd.) G.A. Chandrasiri stated: “We are looking to get tourists from the Central Asian region to use the MRIA. Most of the airlines coming to the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) are from European and South Asian countries. We have never tapped the Central Asian region.”
