ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has sacked Energy minister Udaya Gammanpila and replaced him with Power Minister Gamini Lokuge as part of an mini-cabinet re-shuffle.
Gammanpila was removed for criticizing the government Minister Lokuge said.
“You cannot be in the government and also critcize it,” he told reporters outside the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo after being given the new portfolio.
Pavithra Wanniarachchi was made Power Minister, he said. Lokuge was earlier the power minister.
Other changes will also be made to the cabinet, he said.
A day earlier Gammanpila’s colleague Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa also sharply criticized the current administration’s handling of an economic crisis, brought about by printing money to keep rates down and high deficit spending which has created forex shortages.
